And now comes the most important part of portfolio. Intercultural competencies I gain during these 4 months.
Firstly thanks to my wonderful colleagues I have learned a lot of new things about other cultures. Now I’m aware how different the cultures can be.
Secondly, after I get to know other cultures, it made me curious to get to know more. I think I haven’t watched so many videos and read so many articles about other cultures as much as I’m doing it now. Furthermore I become more open to culture differences.
Another important edge of my personal development is awareness of me, my values, beliefs and identity. It’s clearer for me what I’m standing for and how I perceive the world. And also it’s becomes easier to understand the lens through which we each view the world.
What I learned right in the classroom were skills of interaction. How to discuss serious topics and give my opinion in topic’s I have never thought about and do it in language that is not my mother tongue.
Those stories from my group member lives have made me think very deeply about what is wrong in my life, what I’m doing wrong and what society is doing wrong. And it allowed me to develop sensitivity and empathy. Now I’m being able to shift temporarily into another person’s perspective
The tasks provided by teacher have thought me that there is not one way people thinks. Even I sometimes interpret things in more than one way.
Of course there were a huge theoretical baggage during these months, but the main thing is that we always found the way to compare it with real life examples and it made the studying process much easier.
I also developed my sense of listening, even if we sometimes we spoke in languages that weren’t the same.
This course in general made me think outside the box, accept cultures, and accept myself, who lived in a box for a long time. Now I think I’m stepping some steps outside this box.
Values, everybody has their own, but I was always putting my values before other humans, because I thought that my way of seeing things is the right one. Not anymore, now I will respect other human being, before valuing his/her appearance, characteristics etc. And I think I will be able to discuss such difficult and critical topics as values, beliefs and attitudes among members of multiple cultural groups in a way that does not lead to conflict.
And finally I think I’m ready to deal with more and more difficult situations in intercultural field. And the main thing – I’m not afraid anymore.
